Ranks and Rosaries” encapsulate the 37-year-long illustrious journey of an Indian Army officer from the humble town of Changanacherry, Kerala. The narrative dives into his formative years, showcasing how familial support, a nurturing community, and the socio-political milieu shaped his character. His tale is not just a testament to personal fortitude but a melody of collective strength, nationalistic fervour, and a ceaseless quest for self-betterment, embodying the essence of a life devoted to the service of the nation.
Commissioned into the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering at 19 in 1972, the officer swiftly emerged as a skilled soldier craftsman, managing equipment and supporting combat formations. His service trail spanned India’s diverse terrains: the icy Siachen Brigade, the tranquil Changu Lake in East Sikkim, and the rugged trails of Arunachal Pradesh. During critical historical junctures, he was stationed in Delhi and Bhopal, witnessing the aftermath of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.
A significant facet of his life has been his alliance with Marykutty. Celebrating 45 years of joyful matrimony this year, their voyage together portrays a symphony of love, understanding, and companionship.
His professional journey saw him training in Sweden and Norway, upholding the motto of excellence as a Commanding Officer in Punjab and later as a Brigadier at the 508 Army Base Workshop in Allahabad.
In Secunderabad, he spearheaded the Communication Engineering Department at the Military College, disseminating knowledge to many. An important chapter unfolded in Trivandrum, where he led the NCC organisation in Kerala, nurturing the youth.
Post-retirement in 2008, he immersed himself in community service, politics, and mentorship back in his hometown, with travels, especially to the USA, broadening his perspective. A daunting liver cancer diagnosis rattled his world but also fortified family bonds. Amid the turmoil, his unwavering faith shone, with the Rosary symbolizing a divine anchor.
I’m eager to delve into this book as it promises to be an inspiring journey of resilience, patriotism, and personal growth. The blend of the officer’s military service across diverse historically relevant events and locations, his relationship with encouraging wife, and his post-retirement endeavors in community service and politics presents a captivating narrative that is sure to be both emotionally touching and thought-provoking.
This book sounds like a great read because it tells the story of an Indian Army officer’s life. I always wanted to be one. It covers his early years, his time in the military, his loving marriage, and his work after retiring. It’s a story of strength, love, and service to the country and the community, and I’m excited to learn more about his inspiring journey.
